Common questions
Does object key order or formatting affect the comparison?
No. Whitespace, indentation, and object key order are ignored. Values and types matter: the number 1 differs from the string "1". Arrays are compared by index, so changing their order produces differences.
What does a path such as /users/0/name mean?
Paths use JSON Pointer notation. /users/0/name identifies the name field of the first item in the users array. Within a key, ~1 represents a slash and ~0 represents a tilde. An empty path identifies the document root.
Are my JSON documents uploaded or saved?
No. Parsing and comparison run in this browser. Toolou does not store the input or include it in the tool link. A copied or downloaded comparison report contains the changed values, so you choose when to share it.
What are the comparison limits?
Each document can contain up to 1 million characters and 100 nesting levels. Reports show up to 1,000 changes and clearly indicate when more exist. Use unique object keys. Numbers outside JavaScript's safe integer range, or whose decimal digits would be rounded during parsing, are rejected. Quote those values as strings to compare their digits exactly.
